Rug Size Guide
Rug Size Guide for Australian Homes
Choosing the right rug size is the single most important decision. Too small and it floats awkwardly; too large and it swallows the room. Use this guide to match the right size to your room and furniture layout, then shop directly from the size links below. Every rug ships with free delivery Australia-wide.
Living Room Rug Sizes
| Room Size | Recommended Rug Size | Placement |
|---|---|---|
| Small (up to 3m × 3m) | 160cm × 230cm | Front legs of sofa on the rug |
| Medium (3m × 4m) | 200cm × 290cm | All seating on the rug or front legs only |
| Large (4m × 5m+) | 240cm × 340cm or 300cm × 400cm | Full seating group on the rug with 30–40cm border |
Tip: In open-plan rooms, use the rug to define the lounge zone. Leave clear floor between the rug edge and the dining or kitchen area.
Bedroom Rug Sizes
| Bed Size | Recommended Rug Size | Placement |
|---|---|---|
| Single / King Single | 120cm × 170cm | Beside the bed or across the foot |
| Queen | 200cm × 290cm | Under the bottom two-thirds of the bed |
| King | 240cm × 340cm | Under the bed with rug extending past foot and sides |
Tip: Position the rug so you step onto it when getting out of bed. That first-step softness is the whole point of a bedroom rug.
Dining Room Rug Sizes
| Table Seats | Recommended Rug Size | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| 4-seat | 200cm × 290cm | Rug extends 60–75cm beyond table edges |
| 6-seat | 240cm × 340cm | Chairs stay on the rug when pulled out |
| 8-seat | 300cm × 400cm | Same chair rule — go bigger if in doubt |
| Round table | Round rug (diameter = table diameter + 120cm) | Equal clearance on all sides |
Tip: Choose a stain-resistant or washable rug for dining — spills are inevitable.
Hallway Runner Sizes
| Hallway Length | Recommended Runner |
|---|---|
| Under 1.5m | 80cm × 150cm |
| 1.5m – 2.5m | 90cm × 170cm or 66cm × 244cm |
| 2.5m – 3.5m | 80cm × 300cm |
Tip: Subtract 20–30cm from your hallway length so the runner does not butt against skirting boards or doorways. Leave 10–20cm of floor visible on each side. Browse all hallway runners.

How to Measure
- Clear the area and measure the floor space you want covered (length × width).
- Add 30–60cm border on each side for a balanced look — you do not want the rug touching walls or skirting.
- Use painter's tape to outline the rug dimensions on the floor before buying. Live with it for a day to see if the proportions feel right.
